This is yet another new addition to Joss-Stone.net! This section allows fans to ask Joss questions and she'll answer them! Yes, they're really her answers! There's only a couple of rules, then you can ask away!
Any further concerns? Let me know!
Q&A Updates: September 19, 2005 | October 17, 2005
What questions are you absolutely tired of answering?
How can you sing with so much emotion at your age? Stupid question, it's like say sorry but you are only aloud to cry or laugh when you turn a certain age. Basically there's no age limit on emotion so why ask.
In a magazine interview, you were quoted to have said that you can't comment the way you want to in your songs because they would not be played, and that you hope one day to be popular enough to be able to write what you want. What type of things do you want to be able to say through your music?
When I first started to write I would wana say certain things about what's going on in the world. But as soon as you mention a name or a particular situation that people may know, it won't get played on the radio or they'll take your CD off the market. Personally, I just think that we all need to stop being a bunch of pussies and say what's on our minds. Its called "freedom of speech" where did it go? Everybody's opinion is valid.
What do you think would be the best thing a fan could for you?
You know, the nicest thing a fan can do is just listen and hopefully love. All I want is for people to come to the gig and like it. I don't want people to follow me around from hotel to hotel. It's so sweet but really not necessary. All I want is for people to feel something when they listen to the album. And also if they don't feel it then let me know cos I can't get better if I don't know what my flaws are in the first place.
What is a typical day like in the life of Joss Stone?
I don't think I have those. Every day is different. Sometimes ita a gig ,sometimes travel, sometimes a tv show, a photo shoot an event, sleep day, a fitting, writing, recording, partying, walking dusty, cleaning, cooking, all sorts. It really depends .
What class in school did you hate most?
I hated french. And some sciences and maths I didn't particularly love. And geography sucks. But its funny cos now I'm becoming more interested maybe I'll go back. You can't teach some one until they become interested. It's just not possible. You have to want to learn.
If you could choose 5 people, dead or alive, famous or non-famous to invite for dinner, who would you choose and and why?
Robbie Williams because he's funny and sweet
Dusty Springfield because all I know is her music I would like to know her
Barry White . I think I'd just ask him to talk all night about what ever really who cares what he's saying as long as he's saying something
Nelson Mandela. He's a good man and I would like to hear his story
And my nan. Because she's wicked at a party
What was the first single you bought, with your own money?
Not sure I remember. My sister and I both bought Spice Girls together. Yeah I said it! Spice Girls. I was 8 at the time and proud of it. Girl power!!!
Have you had anyone coming up to you and saying that your music influenced them to pursue a career in music? If so, what would be your advice to them?
Go for it but only if you're doing it for the music. Anything else and it's not worth it. Stay true to you and don't be a whore to sell records.
What song from 'Mind body and soul' do you love performing most?
Spoiled. It gets me everytime .
Who was the artist of the first concert that you attended?
Alicia Keys
In the UK, do you support any football teams?
Yes I support liverpool football team, my nan grew up there
If you could change anything in the world using your celebrity status, what causes would you support?
If I could help a cause I would help bob geldolf as much as I could because he works so hard and its really worth it
You have achieved so much in your career already. You deserve all the success and more. We all like to wish you further success and a long career in this business. Are there any ambitions in life you would like to achieve that you have not already achieved?
I still have lots of things in my life I haven't done yet. I guess my goal is to live as much as I can, see things I haven't seen, go places I've never been, and do things I've never done. That's really what I wana do, I have a habit of doing the things I'm most scared of so I'm not scared any more, I think that's a good habit to have, well I hope it is.
How do you imagine your life would be like now, what other job do you think you would be doing if you were not a singer?
I'm not sure I would be doing much if I wasn't a singer. I wasn't a fan of school so I wasn't planning to go to college, even though I did want to do lots of things, like be a vet or a midwife. But as soon as I was told how many years of studying was needed I was out the door. I guess I just hate to be told what to do. I always found it hard to concentrate on something so boring for instance maths or geography, it seemed impossible to concentrate if it wasn't interesting. I never thought I'd say this but, honestly I wish I would have learned more at school 'cos now I kinda wanna go back. Because now I'm interested . So honestly if I wasn't a singer I would probably be sat on my ass doing nothing but painting flowers and writing poems, hoping for something to happen, I got lucky thank god!
Do you play an instrument? If yes, which ones? If not, would you like to learn to? Which ones?
I don't really play any instruments. I play a tiny bit of piano, just enought to show someone the idea for maybe one song like the daniel track on Mind, Body, and Soul but really that's it.
I wish I could just learn one of my songs well enough to perform it on stage, another one of my goals. I'm trying to learn guitar now. My tech Ryan is teaching me, he's really nice, cheers ryan!
You sing with such emotion in your songs. When performing live do you imagine that you are singing your song to someone?
When I'm singing it really depends on what I'm singing about. I might think about a certain person or a certain situation. I do tend to get a bit emotional, I've always been that way even when I was young. I remember when I was about six my dad played me an Eric Clapton song. It was about his son I think it was called if I saw you in heaven (Tears in Heaven), well I couldn't stop crying till I fell asleep that night. I think, without sounding too cheesy, if you really feel what the singer is feeling you might not even understand it, but it doesn't matter because somethings aren't yours to truely understand. It's all about what you feel. It just gets me and I don't know why. Thats why I love music so much, its so powerful.
Being in the music industry, you must have a tough schedule and work long hours. For what can people wake you in the middle of the night?
Touring and promoting does get very tiring but I don't mind if someone wakes me for something I just go right back to sleep anyway. Usually it's someone on the other side of the world just getting confused by time difference. I don't mind. As long as it's someone nice on the other end of the phone then I'm smiling.
What foreign language would you want to be able to
speak?
I would love to beable to speak italian its a gorgeous language
From the songs you covered on the Soul Sessions, what is your favourite song in its original form by the artist you covered it by?
I think it would have to be the Isley Brothers; Living For the Love of You. It's such a beautiful song
My version is way too long and I think it kinda ruins it if you know the Isley Brothers version well. ooops! Sorry guys if I messed it up. I'll try harder on the next one, I promise :)
